A dark fantasy pixel-art RPG prototype focused on room-based exploration, party combat, and system-first iteration.
About this build
Inspired by table-top roleplaying, Grimea aims to combine the system and narrative depth of old-school text MUDs with the unique visual styles and combat systems found in Gameboy/SNES-era roleplaying games.
Grimea Alpha v1.1.4 is a mechanics-forward demo focused on the current Human-route opening in Fae Village, with combat, recruitment, quest flow, progression, and equipment systems active.
This is still an alpha: content is limited, balancing is ongoing, and systems are being refined for stability and future expansion.
Recent work continues improving combat readability, class clarity, menu flow, follower interactions, and launcher/update reliability.
What is currently playable
- Room-based exploration across the early Fae Village slice, with searchable rooms, interactions, locked spaces, hidden secrets, combat encounters, a shop, and an early quest path.
- Party combat with class skills, consumables, status handling, multi-enemy encounters, and cleaner target-selection flow.
- Per-character EXP progression for the hero and recruited allies.
- Class/race identity with distinct growth curves and resources, presented with clearer role detail.
- Equipment loadouts with weapon/armor/off-hand restrictions by class proficiency.
- Current recruit flow for key NPCs.
- Early quest and reward loop, plus ingredient gathering and consumable crafting support.
- Ongoing quality-of-life updates in UI feedback, dialogue/talk behavior, and patch/update flow.
Current alpha limitations
- Visual polish is still in progress; many art and UI elements are still placeholder.
- Balance is not final (EXP pacing, encounter pressure, skills, and gear tuning are ongoing).
- The overworld travel scene is still in active implementation and does not yet represent final map navigation.
- Some race-route content and side systems are being implemented but not playable yet.
- Save/content compatibility may change between alpha updates.
- You may still encounter bugs, please let us know!
Alpha Roadmap
Planned features/changes on the road to Beta
- All placeholder art replaced with a unified visual style and finalized paper-doll bodies.
- Equipment visually layers onto characters across all race/class combinations.
- Overworld travel system implemented with persistent routing and scene flow.
- Core loops—combat, progression, quests, rewards, loadouts—stabilized for expansion.
- First capital hub introduces side systems, branching routes, and system unlocks.
- Quarter-world content slice delivered with new enemies, items, NPCs, puzzles, and secrets.
- Alpha goal: a polished, replayable Act I foundation ready for ongoing content growth.

- Combat readability and decision clarity (especially skills, status effects, and turn flow).
- Class identity and equipment restrictions (does each class feel distinct?).
- Quest progression clarity and narrative flow.
- Any crashes, soft‑locks, or broken state transitions.
